Retrospective Essay

12/07/2020

During the course of my time during W131, I worked on the assignments during my work hours so I could be more focused than in my apartment.  My apartment was the space I used when creating my immersion experience and watching the film I used to review related to my experience. When I think about W131 I think about the immersion experience, creating Wix, and the film review.  I spent the most time reviewing, experimenting, revising, and editing than the other assignments because I was more focused as well as invested.

For my goals in W131, I worked on exploring my sources and reading in-depth to better understand what I am writing and creating stronger pieces, even if I already understand the gist of what was writing about. As said in Metacognition Explored, "Drawing out and working with existing understandings is important for learners of all ages. Numerous research experiments demonstrate the persistence of preexisting understandings among older students even after a new model has been taught that contradicts the naïve understanding." I also made sure that I made enough supporting sentences for my thesis with resources that back up my writings so the piece itself is more strongly written but also factually accurate. This includes properly citing my sources into and with my writings so they are easily accessed by the audience, viewers, and readers. My final goal was to get better at editing and revising my work and I believe I accomplished that this semester through all the writing assignments we were given.

In W131 I learned narrative writing strategies to catch a reader's attention, such as in media res. Learning and experimenting with these strategies helped me learn which I am best at using and which ones I am used to using, I decided to challenge myself by using ones I am not used to but worked for my writings. The reviews I received on that writing were positive and recognized the strategies used. Most peer reviews were helpful in recognizing mistakes and things I needed to work on as well as helping me recognize the strategies that worked well in my pieces. I did my best to give back the same amount of effort in my reviews to peers, making sure to remain unbiased.

Overall this semester I have gotten stronger in my writing ability and patience in reading my sources to make my writings clearer. This online semester has taught me many things and allowed me to understand and work better with online resources. Although there were times I was frustrated with the abundance of information I received, in the end, I figured them out and worked through them, making the most of my time I had to complete my work. This semester was educational and valuable in my education in writing and work ethic as well as ability.
